AMENA AZIZ

"Amena has only been doing CrossFit for about six months, but in that time has made tremendous progress. Not only has she become physically fitter, her mindset and mental growth has come a long way from where she started. Amena approaches everything with a "can do" attitude, and is more confident than when we first met. She is always looking to improve herself mentally and physically, and jumps at the chance to learn new things. Amena has one of the best work ethics, and I am looking forward to all that she will accomplish this year!"  -COACH ADAM

What do you enjoy most about being a member of CrossFit Middle Village?

The list is so long, but if I had to choose one thing I would definitely say it’s the people! I love being in a room everyday with like minded people who are all striving to be the best version of themselves.

How/when did you get involved in CrossFit?

My then 11 year old son, and I joined the Gym last year during pandemic. He was remote learning and I was personally training with coach Amy, who is an amazing coach and human. Coach Amy encouraged me to have my son join the CrossFit kids program. Coach Ag, began working with him, and I saw such wonderful positive change in him I thought I need to try this as well. At first I was really intimidated, as it looked so intense and I thought I’m never going to be able to do all of that. So I joined CircHIIT first, which is a wonderful workout as well, but my heart always wanted to try CrossFit. I worked up the courage one day and spoke to the coaches and they are so motivating, and encouraged me to try a class. I took my first class on June 25th and have taken class 4-5xs a week ever since! It’s life changing!!!!!

What was your first CrossFit workout? How did you feel afterwards?

My first workout was deadlifts with coach Jay-Ray who is a wonderful instructor. It was extremely challenging, but I felt so accomplished by the end of the class I knew I had to keep going back.

What do you enjoy most about CrossFIt?

What I enjoy the most are the coaches and community as a whole. The coaches at this gym, starting with Chris who is so dedicated to ensuring every member is not only reaching but surpassing their fitness goals, are so dedicated. They say people work for people and that could not be more true for the atmosphere at CrossFit Middle Village. All of the coaches make you feel as though they are not working, but simply there to guide you and help you live a stronger and healthier life.

What is your favorite WOD or Lift?

My favorite WOD is probably doing back squats. I have not perfected the movement yet but I started with an empty 35lb barbell and can now squat with over 100lbs!!!

What is your least favorite WOD or Lift?.

I really dislike doing strict presses. Putting a barbell over my head has always been scarey, but now as I build my strength I’m less afraid and push myself during each workout.

What motivates you? How has CrossFit changed you?

I’m motivated by energy and attention all of the coaches provide in surplus. It’s important for me to feel like all the daily work I put in is propelling me in the right direction. CrossFit has changed my life in so many ways! It’s not just a daily workout I have a completely new lifestyle and outlook. I always put limits on my physical abilities and now know I can learn and do so much more than I ever thought possible. I’m not so worried with perfection, but rather celebrating my daily progress.

What were your goals when you started this journey ?

My goal was for my son and I to stay healthy and active, but I found so much more than that we have a new CrossFit family and are so grateful and blessed.

What are your goals for the upcoming year?

My goals are to continue to build my physical and mental strength with the help of the coaches and community.

Do you have any advice for new members?

I would advise any new member to not be afraid. Fear holds us back, take 1 class and you will surprise yourself with what you can actually accomplish. CrossFit is for everyone!
