CARMEN
"My fellow cap queen! Ugh I love having you as a part of our community. Your beautiful smile not only lights up the room but it just brings such an awesome vibe with it. You work so hard and push yourself in every class. You know your limits and you know when to take it up a notch and when it's a day to dial it back a bit. SMART. You motivate and support all those around you. Your presence always makes the class better and we are excited to read that you plan on being at the box more times a week! Excited to see you smash your goals and keep making your 40+year old body better and better! Congrats on being the athlete of the month. Well deserved girlfriend! Long overdue!!! ;) -Coach Julia
What do you enjoy most about being a member of CrossFit Middle Village?
The sense of community. I love the connections we make, whether it is supporting and pushing each other during a workout and the friendships that we make. This has been vital of my journey and ongoing commitment to improve and sustain physical and mental well-being.
How/when did you get involved in CrossFit?
I am approaching my 14-year anniversary. One of my dear friends introduced me to CrossFit; she mentioned there was a Crossfit opening up in Garden City…yep…driving back and forth from Queens; but I was hooked and have not stopped since.
What was your first CrossFit workout? How did you feel afterwards?
December 2010, a long time ago. I don’t remember the workout, but I felt motivated, strong, excited, accountable to and supported by others.
What do you enjoy most about CrossFIt?
The variations of the workouts work different muscle groups of my body while incorporating cardio. The one-hour programmed group class works great with my busy schedule. I just need to show up to class and know that I will have a great workout.
What is your favorite WOD or Lift? What is your least favorite WOD or Lift?
I love deadlifts and squat cleans—my least favorite strict press.
What motivates you? How has CrossFit changed you?
My motivation is prolonged quality of life, valuing my body as my temple, and knowing that if I take care of it and invest in it, I am hopeful it will function at its best for a longggg time.
What were your goals when you started this journey?
It was finding a fun workout routine that made me stronger and a community of people with similar interests.
What are your goals for the upcoming year?
My goal is to increase my frequency at the box, get stronger, and push a little harder during workouts while listening to my 40+ body. I completed an education program that limited my time at the box, but now I am done. I want to increase my frequency from 2-3x/week to 4x/week.
Do you have any advice for new members?
I encourage others to ensure that their physical health becomes and remains a nonnegotiable priority and a lifelong commitment. Leave your ego behind, listen to what your body can do at that moment, and be grateful for it.
