LINDA WILLINGER

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic Linda was shy and apprehensive about venturing to the CrossFit side.  She began her journey as a CircHIIT starter member, began taking normal CircHIIT classes and later signed up for our Power Hour program where she was introduced to barbells and the world of strength training.  Linda was consistent.  Although a little hesitant, she never said no to trying a new movement.

When we launched our virtual classes, Linda signed up for a 5:30AM class I was coaching.  Two consistent weeks turned into 11 months of being consistent at the 5:30 AM virtual classes with the few exceptions of when she joined Coach Ag and the Juniper Park 6:00 Crew!  Her dedication has made stronger her fitness journey progressing!

Fast forward to this September, our first Saturday open gym.  Linda comes in, says hi to everyone (in her “Quiet Linda” style ), proceeds to walk to the rack where we keep our bands, grabs a few and walks to one of the pull-up bars.  She wraps the bands around the bar and attempts to do assisted pull-ups.  A few members that were already there looked at each other and said HELL YEAH!  Get It LINDA!!! She looked at us and said, “I want to be able to do a pull-up”!!

Since that first open gym in September, Linda has continued to remain consistent taking the 5:30 AM classes.  She now uses barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, along with every other pieces of equipment in our program.  Linda still doesn’t say much, but she speaks loudly through her actions.  As a coach the greatest reward is watching an individual become something that they never imagined possible.  Linda, what a difference 11 months makes...  Your consistent effort, along with your never give up attitude inspires me, and everyone around you.  Keep aiming high and great things will continue to happen!!

Coach Chris

What do you enjoy most about being a member of CrossFit Middle Village?

The members and coaches are fantastic and welcoming.  I was nervous to start CrossFit, but both the members and coaches were encouraging and helpful.  I like how the members motivate and coaches motivate each other to meet tough challenges- there have been times I thought I couldn’t do something, and I was surprised to find out that I could with the encouragement from the group.

How/when did you get involved in CrossFit?

Before I had kids, I used to do distance running and then I didn’t work out for at least 10 years. I realized Ineeded to make a change when I started having sore triceps after scrubbing the bathtub, and my body started rejecting my diet of  mountain dew and cheetos.  I started at CrossFit Middle Village doing CircHiit and Barbell classes.  During the pandemic, I did the virtual classes, and after that, I decided to try CrossFit.  I love it!

What was your first CrossFit workout? How did you feel afterwards?

I don’t know if it was my first, but very early on I went to an OpenGym session.  Some of the members invited me to join them in a bench press workout they were doing, which was great because I can be a little shy.  It was tough for sure, but they provided me with a lot of encouragement and I got through it (although I did need to take a nap after!)

What do you enjoy most about CrossFIt?

I always feel great after every workout, no matter how challenging it was.  I like that the coaches always help you do things the correct way.  I love the variety in the workouts- it keeps me interested and motivated to improve.

What is your favorite WOD or Lift?

I like any barbell work because it is really challenging for me.  I like getting the practice coordinating the movements and continuing to improve.

What is your least favorite WOD or Lift?.

Wall balls!  Although it is sort of love/hate because while I hate doing them, I feel great after!

What motivates you? How has CrossFit changed you?

As a working mother, in the past it has been really hard to fit in time for myself, but I make sure I do it for CrossFit.  I feel better after working out, and CrossFit has made me more confident and has changed my mindset that maybe I can do more things than I thought I could.

What were your goals when you started this journey ?

My goal when I started this journey was to become more lean and increase my strength.

What are your goals for the upcoming year?

I want to be able to do an unassisted pull up!

Do you have any advice for new members?

Keep going!  Even if it is hard or you are sore or you think you can’t do it, you can, and you will feel great after!
